Men's golf, women’s golf and volleyball honored for its multi-year Academic Progress Report
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf, women's golf, and volleyball teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards Tuesday, May 12, for their exceptional work in the classroom as part of the NCAA's Academic Performance Program. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. This is the eighth straight year that volleyball has been honored, while it marks the fourth time in the last five seasons for women's golf. Additionally, men's golf makes the list for the first-time since 2005-06 and the third time overall.
The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates (APR). The scores required to be in the top-10 ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. The number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,266, an increase of 52 teams from last year.
"Our coaches and student-athlete support staff have created a culture where academic excellence is expected," Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee said. "We are grateful to work with student-athletes who are not only gifted in their sport, but academically focused and motivated."
The 1,380 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 881 women's teams and 499 men's or mixed squads. Every women's team earning a Public Recognition Award this year also earned a perfect score.
"The number of teams earning Public Recognition Awards — including those earning perfect scores — has increased again, demonstrating the commitment member schools and college athletes have made to high academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "Congratulations to these teams for their continued academic success."
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 academic years.
A perfect score (or graduation rate) is represented by 1,000, while a 930 (50 percent rate) marks the threshold for which the NCAA can impose sanctions on athletic programs. APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
A total of 91 Division I programs received public recognition in women's volleyball, including EMU, Bowling Green, Miami, and Northern Illinois from the Mid-American Conference. Eastern joined Akron, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Kent State, Ohio, and Toledo as the league's women's golf recipients. EMU, BGSU, and Miami were part of the 107 men's golf programs to receive the accolade.
The MAC had a total of 42 programs recognized Tuesday, while a total of 23 Division I athletic teams from the state of Michigan earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA.
In the 15 years since APR Public Recognition Awards have been handed out, Eastern Michigan has been honored 26 times in nine different sports.
