YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A decorated member of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team, co-captain Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) helped the Eagles win the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in two of the last three seasons.
During her time at EMU, Mason was a three-time First Team All-MAC honoree as the Green and White captured three consecutive 4x100-meter relay titles at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. As a freshman in 2017, Mason featured in the quartet that claimed first prize at the conference meet with a time of 45.45 seconds. She then helped the Eagles defend its title in the same event in 2018 with a mark of 45.27, before winning the relay event in 2019 with a time of 45.04.
Mason also won a pair of individual races during the 2019-20 indoor campaign, defending her 60-meter dash titles at the SVSU Doug Hansen Open, Jan. 17, and Can-Am International, Jan. 25, with times of 7.56 and 7.55, respectively. She also earned Second-Team All-MAC honors after finishing runner-up in the 60-meter sprint with a time of 7.52 as the Green and White held off Northern Illinois to triumph at the 2020 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Akron, Ohio.
Mason won the first title of her collegiate career at the Jack Shaw Classic when her 4x100-meter relay squad finished with a time of 47.03, March 30, 2017. She was also a member of the winning 4x100-meter relay team at the Jesse Owens Classic with a time of 45.04, April 26-27, 2019.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Mason represented Team USA at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, competing in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes under the T46/T47 classification. Mason captured the gold medal in the 100-meter sprint and set a world record with a time of 11.89, while finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.15. Mason was one of 54 athletes selected to the 2020 U.S. Paralympic Track and Field National Team, Jan. 23, as she looks to qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Reflecting on her time at EMU, Mason said, "Being an Eastern (Michigan) Eagle was such an amazing experience for me. When I took my official visit at Eastern for a recruiting visit, I knew for sure that this is where I was meant to be. The Track and Field team welcomed me with open arms like one big family.
My favorite memories at Eastern have been being able to compete at multiple MAC Championships as well as winning two indoor conference championships as a team during my time here. Not only was I able to compete at Eastern for four years, but with the help and support of my team and my coaches Sue Parks and Chris Best, I was also able to represent Eastern Michigan as well as the USA while competing in Dubai at a Paralympic World Championship and breaking the world record because of the great preparation from my coaches to bring me to that point.
I was able to have an unforgettable track career here at Eastern, but I was also able to accomplish a successful undergraduate degree in Exercise Science as well. Being an Eagle has taught me much about hard work, teamwork, and leadership as I had the opportunity to be a team captain for my last indoor MAC championship. Although my senior season was cut short due to the circumstances we are all facing, I wouldn't trade my experiences I have had the last four years for anything!"
In addition to her on-track accomplishments, Mason was a three-time Indoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC honoree, a two-time Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC selection, and honored as a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete following the 2017-18 outdoor season. She graduated this spring with a degree in exercise science.
