The Eagles earned their 10th victory of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team defeated Cleveland State University, 4-3, March 11 at the Chippewa Club to secure the team's 10th victory of the season. The win marks the first time EMU has recorded consecutive 10+ win seasons since the 2005-06, 2006-07 seasons.
"This was a battle from beginning to end," began Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a good job of starting fast and clinching the doubles point, and followed up by doing just enough to get the win. Majda, Isabelle, and Julia all came from behind to get singles wins in a really critical match before we begin MAC play. I'm proud of our effort and glad we got the win today."
To start the day, the pairings of Marie Mayerova (Kremlin, Czech Republic) and Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) at No. 1 and Morgan Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.-Grace Academy) and Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire Sur l'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) at No. 3 won their sets, 6-0 and 6-4, respectively, to win the doubles point for Eastern Michigan.
Cleveland State took the first two singles points at No. 2 and 5 to lead, 2-1, but Isabelle Pompa (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 to tie the match at 2-2. Mayerova clinched Eastern's third point of the match at No. 1 singles, battling to win in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and give the Green and White the 3-1 match lead.
The Vikings came back to tie the match at 3-3, picking up wins at the No. 4 and 5 singles courts. Piatek came through for the Eagles at No. 6, overcoming an early 7-5 loss in the first set to win the next two, 7-5, 6-3 and win the match for Eastern Michigan.
The Eagles will now turn to Mid-American Conference competition, as they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a matchup with Western Michigan University next Sunday, March 22.
