EMU won four singles matches and brought home the doubles point
NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team got back to its winning ways as it dismantled Quinnipiac University, 5-2, today, Feb. 23, at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club.
The win helps Eastern (4-5) improve its record to within one match of a .500 ledger, and was the team's first since it bested Southern Indiana, 7-0, Feb. 7. The result drops QU (3-6) three games below even on the season.
Eastern took home four wins on the singles side, as senior Marie Mayerova (Kremlin, Czech Republic), junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Algappa Marticulation School), freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire Sur I'adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) and sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) all secured individuals at the No. 1, 2, 4, and 6 spots in the lineup, respectively.
Mayerova dropped just four games in a straight-set win, while Pommiers needed just 14 games to win her match, 6-0, 6-2. Piatek also won in straight sets in the six spot, while Ganesan had to battle for a full three sets to edge QU's Andie Williams (6-1, 1-6, 6-3).
After securing four points in singles, EMU cruised to a two-match, one point win in doubles.
The team of Piatek and Mayerova picked up their sixth win as a duo this season as they defeated their Quinnipiac counterpart, 6-4. Newcomer Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) joined forces with Ganesan to earn a second win for the Green and White. The two-match wins secured Eastern's fifth point of the afternoon, giving it a 5-2 win on the day.
Eastern returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 25, as it travels to Philadelphia, Pa. for a matchup with La Salle. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU tennis, visit EMUEagles.com
