YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team opened the 2020-21 season with a 134-104 win against the University of Toledo Friday, Nov. 6, in Mid-American Conference at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles combined for eight wins in the season-opening victory.
Eastern came out strong from the beginning, with the quartet of sophomore Lainie Bell (Atlanta, Ga.-Druid Hills (Northern Arizona)), senior Elli Machado (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township), sophomore Hannah White (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel), and senior Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) taking first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.19.
Newcomer Bell earned her first solo wins in the Green and White, taking the top spots in the 50 freestyle (24.14) and 100 backstroke (58.32).
Along with her win as part of the 200 medley relay team, White tallied her first individual win of the season in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 57.67.
Senior Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) picked up her first win of the season with a 10:39.75 showing in the 1,000 freestyle, while Staffeldt finished at the top of the podium in the 100 freestyle with a 53.36 mark.
In the two 1-meter diving events, EMU's senior diving duo of Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green) and Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) each earned a win. Schempf won the first section with a score of 258.24. In the second event, Berger won with a 292.91 showing, which exceeded the NCAA Zone C qualifying standard (265) and secured her spot in postseason competition.
