Women's Track and Field Set For Doug Hansen Open

The Eagles captured four event titles at last year's meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team heads north to University Center, Mich. to compete at the Doug Hansen Open, Friday, Jan. 17, inside the SVSU Fieldhouse.
The meet hosted by Saginaw Valley State University will feature several Michigan-based schools, as Alma College, Concordia University, Grace Christian University, Jackson College, Lake Superior State University, Macomb Community College, Madonna University, Rochester University, St. Clair County Community College, and Wayne State University are also slated to participate.

The Eagles made their first-ever appearance at this event last season, Jan. 18, 2019. Then-sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) recorded the longest weight throw in program history at the time with a mark of 18.21 meters, surpassing the record of 17.85 meters held by Angela Scarber. Former EMU captain Allyson Goff earned a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.85 meters. On the track, the Green and White had a pair of podium-topping finishes, as junior Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geuaga) and sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) earned top times in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, respectively.
Last time out, The Green and White were runners-up in two events at the Wolverine Invitational, Jan. 11. Redshirt senior co-captain Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) finished in second place in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:54.27, before the 4x400-meter relay team consisting of sophomore Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), junior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), junior Abbey Zastrow (Arcadia, Wis.-Arcadia (University of Mary)), and sophomore Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) earned second spot with a 3:47.84 mark.
Field events are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., while track events are expected to get underway at 4 p.m. From there, the Eagles will return home to prepare for the Can-Am International Saturday, Jan. 25 at Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Field House.
