COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -  Relay teams from Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team secured first-place finishes, as the team concluded its time at the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by the Ohio State University Saturday, April 27. The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team recorded the fifth-fastest effort in EMU history, while the 4x400-meter squad topped Mid-American Conference foes Western Michigan University, Ohio University, the University of Akron, and Miami University en route to its top finish.

EMU's winning its ways began early Saturday with a first-place finish in the 4x100 relay, the squad's first running event of the day. The Eagles' relay team finished first with a time of 45.22, topping teams from Ohio State, Michigan State University, and Kent State University. The squad of juniors Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet), Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), and Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and senior Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell) not only recorded its season-best effort with its podium-topping performance but posted the fifth-fastest relay time in program history.

The 4x400 relay team of freshmen Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) and Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), sophomore Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) and Johnston followed suit with a gold medal performance, crossing the finish line in 3:48.02, five seconds faster than the field of competitors.

The day saw 13 top-10 performances, with four of those marks acting as career-best efforts. Freshman Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) earned a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.99, while Johnston earned second in the 200m with a top-collegiate outdoor performance of 53.96. Fellow freshman Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) recorded her new top time in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 1:02.98, good for fifth place. Senior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) finished seventh in the 800m with a career-best mark of 2:09.74, the 10th-fastest mark in program history.

Senior Harris also recorded two top-10 individual efforts throughout the day, placing third in the 100m with a season-best run of 11.69, while finishing ninth in the 200m with a 2019-best time of 24.67. Her 100m performance topped the MAC rankings by .08 seconds, while her 200m ranks 21st in the conference this outdoor season.

The Green and White has one more competition on its schedule before the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 9-11, traveling down Washtenaw Ave. to compete in the Len Paddock Open hosted by the University of Michigan Friday, May 3. Events in Ann Arbor are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. For more information on the Eagles, visit the team's page on EMUEagles.com or follow the team on Twitter @EMUWXC_TF.
