Top program marks fell as the Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team competed at the Mid-American Conference Championships Thursday, Feb. 28, inside Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of University of Akron. Seniors Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) and Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) each broke their own program records to keep the Eagles in second place after two days of conference championship competition.

Host Akron currently sits in first place with 319 points, followed by the Eagles with 221 points and the University at Buffalo with 199 points. Miami University, Bowling Green State University, and Ohio University hold fourth through sixth place with 173, 125, and 121 points, respectively. Ball State University and the University of Toledo round out the standings with 87 and 61 points each.

For the second time today, Swartz set the top program mark in the 500 Freestyle, finishing with a NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 4:34.84 on her way to a second-place finish. Right behind the senior in the Championship heat was sophomore Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego), using a career-best effort of 4:48.49 to secure sixth overall. The Oswego, Ill. native also etched her name to the EMU record book as her performance registered the fifth-fastest effort in program history. In the Consolation finals, sophomore Kaitlynd Scanlan (Waukesha, Wis.-Pewaukee) swam a season-best time of 4:52.84 to add points to the board for the Green and White.

The second round of championship heats saw Duncan break her own EMU record in the 200 Individual Medley with a NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 1:59.45, good for fifth place.  Junior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) earned the top finish in the Consolation finals, tapping in with a personal-best time of 2:00.99. Young's effort also recorded the second-best 200 IM time in Eastern Michigan laurels.

Rounding out the Eagles' individual swims were sophomore Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) and junior Amelia Armstrong-Grant's (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline (Iowa)) 10th and 11th-place finishes in the 50 Freestyle, respectively. Staffeldt bested her prelims time by .28 seconds, as her 22.96 finals time notched the fourth-fastest swim in the Green and White's history. Armstrong-Grant followed suit with a career-best swim of 23.03 in the Consolation final, topping her prelim time by .02 seconds while also collecting the sixth-best 50 Free time in school history.

EMU shined on the springboard, as all five Eagles' divers secured positions in the Championship heats after the afternoon's preliminary dives. Junior Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) earned the Green and White's top finish of the day, placing fourth overall with a score of 275.85. Securing fifth and sixth place were sophomore Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio- Glen Este) and junior Brielle Johnston (Ottowa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) with scores of 275.75 and 269.30, respectively.
