Kevin McAdoo led the Eagles with 13 points
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – A cold shooting streak doomed the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team Saturday, Feb. 16, as Kent State University used two large scoring sprees to bury the Eagles in the M.A.C. Center, 71-58.
EMU (11-13, 5-6 MAC), who trailed by as many as 17, cut the deficit to 10 with just under four minutes to go, but was never able to overtake KSU (18-6, 7-4 MAC), who extended its win streak to three while simultaneously snapping the Green and White's at two.
Leading 22-21 at the final media timeout of the first half, Eastern watched Kent State go on a 9-2 run to close the half and take control of the game, 30-24. To compound the issue, the Golden Flashes started the second half on a 16-5 run, effectively burying the Eagles.
Sophomore Kevin McAdoo (Pontiac, Mich.-West Bloomfield) led the way for EMU, dropping in 13 points, and redshirt sophomore Tariq Silver (Clarksville, Tenn.-Northwest) was the only other Eagle to reach double-figure scoring, tying his career-high with 10 points. Senior James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) pulled down nine boards and is now 64 away from breaking the all-time Eastern Michigan record, held by Kennedy McIntosh.
The game marked just the third time this season and the first time in MAC play that the trio of Thompson and redshirt seniors Paul Jackson (Stone Mountain, Ga.-Martin Luther King Jr. (Eastern Kentucky)) and Elijah Minnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Lincoln Park (Robert Morris)) were held to single-digit scoring outputs.
Eastern Michigan was narrowly outshot from the floor for the game (41.7 percent to 43.1 percent), but Kent State held the advantage from the long line (33.3 percent to 25.0 percent) and the charity stripe (72.4 percent to 61.9 percent). Both teams finished the game with 30 rebounds, while Eastern coughed the ball up 16 times compared to Kent's 10.
The Eagles return home for the start of a three-game homestand Tuesday, Feb. 19 when they welcome the University of Toledo to the Convocation Center for a 7 p.m. game.
