The season-opener saw multiple top-three performances from the Eagles

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team opened the 2019-20 season with 14 top-three finishes across both swimming and diving events at the University at Buffalo Saturday, October 19.

Highlighting performances from the Eagles, senior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) turned in two second-place results. One in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 59.39, and the other in the 50-yard backstroke at 26.37.

Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline) posted second, third, and fourth place finishes in freestyle events. The senior took second in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:56.38, third in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.55, and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.76.

Senior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) turned in a 56.52 second-place finish the 100-yard backstroke and third-place in the 50-yard backstroke, touching the wall with 26.84 on the clock.

Juniors Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) and Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) also each claimed a top-two spot. For Hoffman, it was in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:31.82, and Shugarman in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:50.17.

The Eagles host their first home meet under new head coach Derek Perkins next Saturday, October 26, at 2 p.m. at Jones Natatorium.
