Eastern Rolls to 93-67 Win Over Western

1/26/2019 5:25:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Redshirt senior Elijah Minnie led the way with a career-high 29 points

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, as the Eagles rolled to a 93-67 victory over Western Michigan University Saturday, Jan. 26, in University Arena.

Eastern (9-11, 3-4 MAC) was able to build its lead thanks to a high-powered first half that saw the Green and White score 49 points and shoot 52.6 percent from the floor. Western (6-14, 0-7 MAC) cut its early deficit to just one at the 8:43 mark, but EMU built its lead to 12 at the break and never looked back. The Eagles put the game away thanks to a 15-0 run that lasted over five minutes, turning an 11-point margin into 26.

The Eagles' "Big Three" made their presence known in the game, as redshirt senior Elijah Minnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Lincoln Park (Robert Morris)) led the way with 29 points, tying his career high. Senior James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) was a force inside, scoring 14 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, good for his ninth double-double of the season. Redshirt senior Paul Jackson (Stone Mountain, Ga.-Martin Luther King Jr. (Eastern Kentucky)) notched his second career double-double thanks to 12 points and 10 assists. Sophomore Kevin McAdoo (Pontiac, Mich.-West Bloomfield) added 16 points, knocking down 3-of-6 from downtown.

For the game, Eastern out-shot Western, 47.9 percent to 41.7 percent, while also doubling up the Broncos from downtown, as the Eagles knocked down 11 three-pointers to the Broncos' five. Eastern's 11 threes marked the second time this season that the Green and White topped double-digits from downtown.

EMU's ability to force turnovers proved to be a vital part of the Eagles' big day, forcing the Broncos in 16 turnovers while committing just seven themselves, while also scoring 27 points off WMU's miscues. Eastern also held the advantage in rebounding (43 to 36), points in the paint (45 to 36), and second chance points (23 to 14).  The Green and White added 17 assists as a team on 34 made shots.

Eastern returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 29 when it continues its in-state MAC tour at Central Michigan University. The Eagles and Chippewas are set to tip at 7 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
