The 16 were recognized as the 'best of the best' from each sport's Academic All-MAC teams
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced Monday, July 9, its list of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the eight spring sports for the 2017-18 academic season. Out of the 138 student-athletes on the list, 16 Eagles were recognized as the 'best of the best' from each sport's Academic All-MAC teams.
Women's track and field led the way with seven honorees for the second consecutive year, while baseball followed with four. Moreover, men's track and field added three, with men's golf and softball each having one. Out of the 16 selections, 10 earned a GPA of 3.75-or-better, including one with a perfect 4.0.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2016-17 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a third-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the winter sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
