YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
Eastern Michigan University Athletics held the inaugural Dress for Success Fashion Show Monday, Dec. 3, in the Convocation Center Atrium. The goal of the event was to instruct student-athletes, along with the general student population, on how to dress appropriately when entering the business world.

The Dress for Success Fashion Show emphasized three different looks: business casual, what not to wear, and business professional/interview. EMU student-athletes from several sports modeled each respective look, while the night's emcees, football senior captain Kyle Rachwal (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C) President Samantha Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) broke down each look and the necessary elements to dress for success.

Life after collegiate athletics concludes can be a difficult adjustment, but Eastern Michigan University Athletics is determined to adequately prepare their student-athletes for life outside of sports, including how to dress professionally. Karen Schiferl, Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services, said, "We know students want to make a great impression when they get an interview, but they may not be fully prepared.  The first impression is so important to success and this fashion show, which has been largely student-athlete driven, is a fun way to educate on how to dress for success".

This event aimed to afford student-athletes a chance to get an introduction into suitable wear for a variety of business endeavors that they will have upon graduation..

All of clothing the student-athlete models wore in the show was provided from Banana Republic and Men's Warehouse, two companies with stores located in the Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor area. It is important to show how accessible and affordable dressing for success can be.

As for the message, EMU Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) hopes that those in attendance left with the understanding of how important first impressions are and how the impact of dressing well can have on a person's first impression of you.

"This is a great opportunity for student-athletes to start thinking about what they are going to do after college. We always wear sweats and or leggings, and this will help guide us in the process of becoming young adults," senior gymnast Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill.-Belleville) said.

The Dress for Success Fashion Show is one of several presentations the EMU SASS has put on so far this year to help prepare student-athletes not just for academic success, but for life after sports and college.
