Huskies' Hot Second Half Downs Eagles in Boston

12/1/2018 5:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Redshirt senior Elijah Minnie led the way with 24 points in the effort

BOSTON (EMUEagles.com) – After a hot-shooting first half, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was unable to keep pace with Northeastern University in the second stanza and ultimately fell, 81-67, at the hands of the Huskies in Matthews Arena.

EMU (4-5) shot a blistering 68-percent from the floor in the first half, and took a three-point lead into the break. Unfortunately for the Eagles, NU (4-4) came out in the second half on a mission, shooting 61-percent from the floor and ultimately pulling away for the victory.

Redshirt senior Elijah Minnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Lincoln Park (Robert Morris)) led the Eagles in double-figure scoring with 24 points. Senior James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) chipped in 11 points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds, and redshirt junior Boubacar Toure (Dakar, Senegal-Phase One Academy (Grand Canyon)) had 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.

Eastern led by as many as 14 in the first half, building up its largest advantage with 5:28 to go in the stanza. Northeastern closed out the half on a 13-2 run, and clung to the momentum to start the second half. With both sides trading punches to start the half, the Huskies took the lead for good when a three-pointer from Jordan Roland fell through to put NU up 58-55.

Some of the other highlights for the Eagles on the day was another impressive performance from junior Damari Parris (Bowie, Md.-Evelyn Mack Academy (Trinity Valley C.C.)), who had eight assists and just one turnover in 31 minutes of play. Freshman Andre Rafus Jr. (Baltimore, Md.-Reach Partnership) tossed in a career-high five points.

For the game, Northeastern held the edge in overall shooting percentage (56.3 to 54.9), three-point shooting (34.8 to 30.0), free throw percentage (76 to 50), rebounding (28 to 23), and forced turnovers (11 to 7). Though Eastern held the advantage in bench points (18 to 11), and points in the paint (32 to 28), it was not enough to push the Green and White to victory.

The Eagles return home for their next matchup, hosting head coach Rob Murphy's alma mater Central State University in the Convocation Center Saturday, Dec. 8 at 12 p.m.
