YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was unable to match Western Michigan University's second-half offensive display Tuesday, Jan. 30, falling 71-57 inside the Convocation Center.
The Eagles (12-10, 3-6 MAC) came up short against the Broncos (13-9, 5-4 MAC) at home for the first time since Feb. 27, 2011, snapping a six-game win streak. EMU finished 37.5 percent from the field on 18-of-48 shooting, and shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23) in the second half. WMU hit at a modest 43.5 percent (27-of-62) clip overall, but shot 60 percent (18-of-30) in the final frame, connecting on seven triples.
Junior James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) led the Green and White with 24 points on 7-of-8 shooting and tied a season-high with 18 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the campaign. Senior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College High School) added 11 points, four assists, and three boards off the bench. Redshirt junior Elijah Minnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Lincoln Park) tallied eight points to go with three rebounds, and was one of four Eagles to record a steal.
After falling behind 2-0, Thompson split a pair of free throws before Minnie threw down a powerful one-handed slam to give the Eagles their first lead, 3-2, with 17:25 to go in the opening half. Trailing 11-7, freshman Kevin McAdoo (West Bloomfield, Mich.-West Bloomfield) set up Minnie for an alley-oop to cut the deficit in half with 12:16 left in the first frame.
Down 16-12, EMU responded with a 5-0 run capped by a three-point basket from redshirt junior Jordan Nobles (Canton, Mich.-Canton) to go back in front, 17-16, with 4:14 remaining in the first period. The Eagles led by as many as three in a tight opening half and took a 21-20 edge into the locker room.
Tied at 23, freshman Malik Ellison (Flint, Mich.-Beecher) connected on a corner three put the Green and White ahead, 26-23, with 17:38 to play in the second half. The momentum suddenly broke WMU's way, as the Broncos went on an 18-2 run and built a 44-28 lead with 11:56 left in the second stanza.
EMU looked to get back into the contest, at one stage going on a 6-0 run to cut WMU's lead to 56-41 with 5:54 remaining in the second half as the Broncos called a timeout. However, the Eagles were unable to trim the deficit to single-digits and fell by a 14-point margin.
Eastern Michigan wraps up a rare two-game homestand Saturday, Feb. 3, against Ball State University. The game will be the first leg of a doubleheader with the women's team hosting Central Michigan University. The men's contest tips at 12 p.m. with the women's game to follow at approximately 2:30 p.m.
