It is the second straight MAC weekly honor for the Eagles
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University junior right-handed pitcher Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Baseball Pitcher of the Week today, April 3. It is the first weekly award of his career, and the second straight for EMU after fellow junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) took home the honor last week.
Mattson tossed EMU's second complete-game shutout in the last five games in a 4-0 win over Butler University, Sunday, April 2. The righty went the distance, only surrendering two hits, both singles, while striking out six. It was the first complete game of his career. The win came in game one of a doubleheader sweep to close out a three-for-four weekend in Chicago with two wins over host Chicago State, and the single victory over the Bulldogs.
The win was the third of the season for Mattson, which leads the team. Overall, he is pitching to a 5.94 ERA in a tied for team-best seven starts, totaling 36.1 innings with 22 strikeouts.
Eastern returns to play tonight, Tuesday, April 4, when they host in-state foe Michigan State University. First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
