Nationally ranked Division II UC San Diego defeated EMU 5-4

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team began its Spring Break trip to California with a 5-4 loss at No. 13-ranked NCAA Division II University of California, San Diego, Tuesday, Feb. 21. The Eagles (3-7) played Division II rules, meaning all nine matches count toward the final score. EMU defeated the Tritons (5-0) in a pair of singles and doubles contests.

Beginning with doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) defeated UCSD's Britta Mosser and Shannon Theisen with ease, 8-2, while Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) teamed up at No. 2 to take down Becky Chou and Ashley Chao, 8-5.

In singles play, Mayerova walked away from the court with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mosser, while Martinovska defeated Chou, 6-0, 7-5. At No. 3, Ribero was the only loss in singles play to take her match to three sets, falling, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, in fourth position to Jasmine Hosseini.

"Tough loss today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I knew this would be a close one. We just didn't have enough today to come out on top. We just need consistent improvement before the conference season."

EMU returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 22, for its second-straight match in the Golden State. The Eagles will take the court against San Diego State at 2 p.m. PT.
