YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team has announced that the fourth annual Lead Off Dinner will take place Saturday, Feb. 10, beginning at 6 p.m. in the EMU Student Center Ballroom.
The event will help the EMU baseball team fund its spring trips, as well as other projects to help enhance the team's performance throughout the season. The Oestrike Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to its newest recipient, Doug Martin, during the event. There will also be a keynote speech delivered by MLB legend Kirk Gibson.
In addition to serving dinner and drinks, a raffle and silent auction will be held throughout the night for several pieces of baseball memorabilia, as well as EMU baseball items and experiences.
Gibson was a 17-year MLB veteran, including 12 seasons with the Detroit Tigers. He was a two-time World Series Champion (1984 Tigers, 1988 Dodgers), while also being named the 1984 ALCS MVP, as well as the 1988 NL MVP. He went on to manage the Arizona Diamondbacks for five seasons (2010-14), including winning the 2011 NL Manager of the Year.
Martin was a four-year letterwinner for Eastern Michigan from 1988-1991, and finished his career as one of the best pitchers to ever wear the Green and White. For his career, Martin still holds school records for complete games (26), wins (33), and innings pitched (338.1), while also ranking seventh in strikeouts (212), and 13th in ERA (3.88). He was a three-time all-conference honoree, earning second team honors as a freshman in 1988, and then first team honors his final two seasons in 1990 and 1991. In addition, he was named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year in 1991, the first Eagle to earn the award.
That 1991 season, the co-captain pitched 10 complete games, and earned 10 wins to go along with a career-best 2.99 ERA and a team-best 71 strikeouts in 96.3 innings. His efforts led to him being drafted by the hometown Tigers in the 44th round of the 1991 MLB draft. The Northville, Mich. native spent two seasons in the Tigers organization, playing at the Class A level in Niagara Falls.
Individual tickets for the event start at $125, while kids 12 and under are just $25. There are also options to sponsor a student-athletes meal for $35, as well as sponsoring a table, which includes four tickets and a special gift, for $1,000.
