Eagles Sit In First-Place After Day One Of EMU Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
Five wins fueled the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving to a solid opening day of the EMU Invitational Friday night, Dec. 1, at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles currently sit in first-place after picking up four individual victories and a relay win, while compiling a day one total of 374 points, leading Wayne State University by 81 points.

Starting the invitational on the springboard, the Eagles snagged two of the top-three spots in the 3-meter with senior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) tying for first-place with a final score of 271.15. Sophomore Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) rounded out the top-three with a season-best score of 255.10.

The Eagles sent four swimmer to the pool for the 1650 freestyle. ultimately going 1-2-3-4. Junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) led the Green and White, punching in at 16:29.67, notching the fastest mile time in the conference this season. Senior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) and freshman Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) each clocked season-best times of 16:53.12 and 17:12.78 to take second and third, respectively.

EMU's winning streak carried over to the 200 backstroke where sophomore Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) secured her fifth event win of the season with a time of 2:00.96. Fellow sophomore Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) rounded out the top-three with a time of 2:01.91.

Eastern continued to extend its lead with a strong showing in the 100 free. Freshman Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) led the charge, touching in at 51.80 to take second. Right on her heels was senior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown) who secured third-place with a time of 51.89. 

Moving to the 200 breaststroke, junior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) continued to show her dominance in the event, earning her third win of the season, clocking in with a time of 2:17.04.

After junior Emilie Desnoyers (St. Albert, Alberta) and freshman Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly, the Eagles closed out the day with a 400 free relay win. Staffeldt, junior Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.), Armstrong-Grant, and Walker bested the field with a time of 3:25.29. Another EMU cohort consisting of juniors Marissa Marion (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), Rebecca Winnert (Buffalo, N.Y.-Williamsville), Dora Vrcic (Dubrovacka, Split, Croatia), and Desnoyers claimed second at 3:29.05.

Eastern will wrap up the meet tomorrow, Dec. 3, at Jones Natatorium. The day gets underway with a morning session set to begin at 10 a.m. before the meet comes to a close in the evening session, which is slated for 6 p.m.
