The recruiting class is the largest in five years
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Softball Head Coach Melissa Gentile announced the signing of seven high school seniors to National Letters of Intent, Nov. 28. The Green and White inked Gabbi Campbell (Brunswick, Ohio-Brunswick), Kenna Garst (Petersburg, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic Central), Dani Hall (Galloway, Ohio-Bishop Ready), Cheyenne Hindman (Harrisville, Pa.-Slippery Rock), Mia Hoveland (McFarland, Wis.-McFarland), Chayse Skinner (Spring Hill, Fla.-Nature Coast Technical), and Julia Vollmer (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon East) to make up the largest recruiting class since 2012 when the Eagles signed seven to the 2014 recruiting class.
"I'm thrilled to introduce these seven new Eagles to our softball fans and community as they represent five different states," Gentile said. "The talent in this group of athletes runs deep and will provide us with several different options for our lineup. Like the class before them, they are strong in the classroom and uphold the high academic standards that we have here at EMU. I can't wait to get them on the field and see the immediate impact I'm confident they will have."
Hailing from Brunswick, Ohio, Campbell joins the Eagles as a four-year letterwinner at Brunswick High School where she has served as a team captain for three years. The shortstop raked in several honors for her efforts as she was named first team all-county and all-conference as well as second team all-district last season. Named her team's Most Valuable Player, Campbell also earned the Medina Gazette Player of Year award as junior. Campbell also lettered in soccer and basketball for the Blue Devils.
Garst is a talented and well-rounded player out of Petersburg, Mich., where she was a four-year letterwinner for St. Mary's Catholic Central with the ability to play at catcher and outfield. In addition to being a two-time First Team All-District HLC and all-region selection, Garst has also been honored as First Team All-District TCC for a season. The two-time Division III State Champion was honored as a first team all-state member at the catching position. Garst also participated in volleyball at St. Mary's.
Hall comes to Ypsilanti from Galloway, Ohio, where she was a four-year letterwinner for Bishop Ready High School. Hitting a blistering .512 batting average, Hall tallied 44 hits and 19 RBIs during her junior season to help the Silver Knights to a district championship. The Central District All-Star Team honoree raked in first team all-state, all-district, and all-league accolades for her efforts on the field. Hall was also a two-year member of the Ohio Stingrays club team. In addition to softball, Hall also lettered in basketball where she was honored as top-10 all-district, First Team All-CCL, and honorable mention all-district.
Adding depth to the pitching position is Hindman, a four-year letterwinner and captain for the Rockets of Slippery Rock High School. The Harrisville, Pa. native is a two-time District 10 Region Pitcher of the Year and was also named a District 10 Big School All-Star. The three-time first team all-district honoree helped her squad to a regional championship two times.
Hoveland joins the Eagles after a decorated pitching career at McFarland High School. A three-time first team all-conference honoree, the McFarland, Wis. native was named the Rock Valley North Conference Player of the Year for her performance during her junior year. Hoveland was also honored as First Team all-district as well as second team all-state last season. During her sophomore year, the three-time captain earned honorable mention all-district honors for her efforts in the circle. In her first season with the Spartans, Hoveland was named the team's Rookie of the Year. A three-year member of the Wisconsin Lightning Fastpitch team, Hoveland led her team to a second-place finish at the Peoria PGF Midwest Regional.
