Justin Shields Named As EMU Swimming And Diving Assistant Coach

Shields joins the coaching staff from Solna, Sweden

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team has added Justin Shields to the coaching staff, Head Coach Peter Linn announced Monday, Oct. 30. Shields joins the staff as an assistant coach with six years of coaching experience under his belt.

Shields comes to Ypsilanti from Solna, Sweden where he most recently served as the Championship Group head coach for the Solna Sundbyberg Swim Club. There, he was responsible for the development and execution of a tri-seasonal training cycle to prepare athletes for the major championship meets in Sweden. He also created a developmental strategy plan aimed at maintaining a continuous flow of talent throughout the training groups.

From 2012-2016, he acted as the Elite Group head coach at the Stockholm Police Aquatics where he coached a member of the Swedish Junior National team and was recognized as the club's Coach of the Year. Shields also qualified 16 athletes to the 2016 Swedish Short-Course National Championships. During his time in Stockholm, he was selected as a coach for the 2015 Swedish Open Water National Team that competed in Wuhan, China.

Prior to his move to Sweden, Shields served as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Indianapolis for the 2011-12 season. At Indianapolis, he assisted in coaching the sprint and middle-distant programs and led the team to an 11th (women) and 12th-place (men) finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. There, several of the athletes earned All-American accolades for their performances.

During his time in Indianapolis, Shields also coached for the Greenwood Gators Swim Club and High School Varsity team. There he motivated and coached athletes in the foundations of stroke efficiency and technique. 

A 2010 graduate from Wayne State University, Shields earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice. As a member of the WSU swimming and diving team, he was named an All-American eight times and served as a captain his senior year.
