YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team emerged victorious in the EMU Triangular today, Jan. 28. Eastern edged out both Kent State and Central Michigan, finishing with a total of 116 points.
"I thought we had a really solid day," stated Head Coach Sue Parks. "Obviously it was nice to get the win against two MAC teams, but I think we had some really strong performances, especially in the pole vault, the triple jump, and the distance runners. Jasmine Jones was also really good in the sprints, so overall I thought it was a good showing for us."
Junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) paced the Green and White in the 60m dash, securing second-place with a time of 7.63. Rounding out the top-three was sophomore Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell), clocking in at 7.65 to take third. Jones also had an excellent day in the 200m, winning the event with a career-best time of 24.37 seconds, tying her for the 10th-best mark in program history.
Freshman Micah Johnston brought home another gold for EMU in the 400m dash, winning the race with a personal-best time of 56.79 seconds. Sophomore Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio – Westerville North) also finished in the top-three, nabbing third in 59.27 seconds. Junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) had a race for the record books in the 800m, winning with a time of 2:09.29, giving her the fifth-quickest mark in program history.
In the mile, sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) also had a fantastic day, winning the event with a career-best time of 4:47.59. Her time also put her in a tie for the eighth-best mark in EMU history. Junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) ran with her the entire way, claiming second in 4:48.54. Junior Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind. – Penn) was the team's top runner in the 3000m, as the Granger, Ind. Native finished second with a personal-best time of 10:07.27. Also finishing in the top-three was redshirt sophomore Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich. – Warren Mott), who crossed the finish line in 10:10.47, which was also a career-best.
The Green and White also came out on top in the 4x400m relay, as Jones edged out Kent State in the final lap, giving the Eagles a time of 3:46.87. Junior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. – Toms River North) secured a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.73 seconds, while senior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) took fourth.
Transitioning to the jumps, freshman Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic) posted a career-best jump of 1.60 meters/ 5 feet 3-inches, which was good for a third-place finish. Senior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. – Grand Rapids Christian) had an outstanding day in the pole vault, taking second and securing a mark of 4.10 meters/ 13 feet 5.25-inches. Not only was that a career-best, but it was also the fifth-best mark in program history.
Junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) secured victories in both the long jump and the triple jump. Dreimane finished atop the podium in the long jump with a mark of 5.84 meters/ 19 feet 2-inches, in addition to winning the triple jump with a mark of 12.42 meters/ 40 feet 9-inches.
Moving to the shot put, sophomore Jada Taylor (Neptune, N.J. – Neptune) had a career day, taking fifth and posting a personal-best mark of 10.32 meters/ 33 feet 10.25-inches. In the weight throw, sophomore Morgan Turner (Norwalk, Ohio – Norwalk) led Eastern, finishing with a mark of 15.60 meters/ 51 feet 2.25-inches, which was a career-best. Taylor also had a solid day, finishing one spot behind Turner in sixth with a throw of 14.43 meters/ 47 feet 4.25-inches.
Next week, the team will split up for a pair of meets, heading to both the Meyo Invitational and the Akron Invitational, Feb. 3-4.
