Day One of Gopher Invitational In the Books

The Eagles completed the first day of the 2016-17 campaign in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team began the 2016-17 campaign Friday, Sept. 23, when it traveled to Minneapolis, Minn. to take part in the 2016 Gopher Invitational on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Eagles saw a pair of its doubles teams participate, while five members took the court for singles play.
In doubles action, the duo of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Maria Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) dropped their first contest to San Jose State's Miyo Kobayashi and Gaelle Rey, 6-3, before taking on Karyna Bihel and Caroline Ryba from Minnesota and stepping away with a 6-3 victory. Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) teamed up but fell, 6-4, in both of their matches. First, the sqaud lost to Iowa's Adorabol Huckleby and Carin Runefelt, before South Dakota State's Morgan Brown and Iasmin Rosa knocked off the duo. Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) teamed up to square off with South Dakota's Anastasia Bondarenko and Barbora Kollarova, falling 6-0. In Veleva and Barcelo's second match, the Eagles fell, 6-3.
In singles play, Gogvadze competed in Flight A for the Green and White. In her first match, the Tbilisi, Georgia native took down Iowa's Zoe Douglas, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. Mayerova was knocked off in the first round of Flight B's play, 7-6, 6-0, at the hands of Bihel. Martinovska was successful in her first single match of the year, defeating Milwaukee's Hayley Marshall in two sets, 7-5, 6-2. Veleva dropped her opening round match in Flight D. Both Gogvadze and Martinovska moved on to the quarterfinals, but Gogvadze was unable to continue advancing in her flight. She dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Ryba. Martinovska was able to continue advancing by topping Minnesota's Kalyssa Hall, 6-4, 6-1. In their consolation matches, Mayerova fell to Rey, 7-5, 6-4, while Veleva was able to defeat South Dakota State's Maria Velasco, 6-4, 6-2.
"We had a rough first day in doubles," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. " I see the things we need to work on over the next few days. We had a few good singles wins out there today. We just need to get tough and continue to improve each day."
EMU returns to action Saturday morning, Sept. 24, when the Eagles continue with their second day of the Gopher Invitational. Saturday's action will begin at 9 a.m. from the Baseline Tennis Center.
