Senior Ellie Tillar recorded a point for the fourth consecutive game
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team fell to the University of Detroit Mercy Sunday, Sept. 18, at Scicluna Field. The Eagles (2-4-1) scored first but the Titans (3-5-1) used two second half goals to hand the Green and White a 2-1 setback.
A relatively quiet first half saw the teams combine for just four shots. The Eagles used a 3-1 advantage in the category to gain an early lead in the 35th minute. Fueled by strong play in the midfield, senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) played a ball over the top to the edge of the 18 where senior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) split a pair of defenders. After successfully breaking through the Detroit defense, Hirsch fought off a charging UDM keeper with a one hop volley for her first goal of the season.
With a 1-nil lead, the Eagles looked to be on their way to victory in the second half until a 76th minute strike by the Titans leveled the score.
Over the next 14 minutes, the two sides traded opportunities but the keepers kept the 1-1 draw intact, forcing extra time.
In the overtime period, the Titans garnered a free kick just inside midfield. Delivering a high cross, Detroit's Kristen Tobin headed it in for the game-winner in the 94th minute.
With the non-conference play in the rearview mirror, the Eagles open the Mid-American Conference season on the road next weekend, Sept. 23-25. Eastern begins a grueling MAC slate in Kalamazoo, Mich. Friday, Sept. 23, against reigning MAC Tournament Champion Western Michigan. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
