YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will conclude their season this week with the NCAA Championships, June 8-11. The Eagles will have a pair of athletes competing throughout the four-day meet in Eugene, Oregon.
The Green and White will first see redshirt senior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. – Murrieta Valley) take part in the decathlon, where he enters the meet as the 12th-seeded decathlete. Last season, Simmons also qualified to the NCAA Championships as the third-ranked decathlete before he was forced to bow out after the high jump.
In addition to Simmons, redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee) will also don the Green and White in Eugene. Fink will compete in the 3000m steeplechase, where he comes in with the No. 9 seed after running a personal-best time of 8:40.60 at the NCAA East Regional. Like Simmons, this marks the second consecutive season in which Fink has qualified to the National Championships, as he ran in the 5000m last year.
The meet will begin for the Eagles on Wednesday, June 8, where Simmons will begin the decathlon with the 100m dash at 12:30 p.m. The redshirt senior then follows with the long jump at 1:10 p.m., shot put at 2:25 p.m., and the high jump at 3:40 p.m. Next up, Fink will take part in the 3000m steeplechase semifinals at 5:02 p.m. Day one will then conclude at 6:56 p.m., when Simmons runs the 400m dash.
The following day, June 9, Eastern will see Simmons finish the decathlon. His day begins with the 110m hurdles at 10:30 a.m., followed by the discus throw at 11:20 a.m. and pole vault at 12:30 p.m. Finally, Simmons will finish out the 10-event competition with the javelin throw at 3 p.m., and finally the 1500m run at 6:56 p.m. To finish out the meet, Fink may participate in the 3000m steeplechase finals, June 10, at 5:54 p.m. based on qualification from the semifinals.
