The honor is the second of the season for Slocum
CLEVELAND, Ohio. (EMUEagles.com) — For the second time this season, sophomore Rachel Slocum (Holly Springs, N.C. - Holly Springs) of the No. 17 Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team was tabbed Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, announced today, April 6, by the league office. The honor comes on the heels of the team's incredible performance at the NCAA Regional, April 2.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. Slocum currently maintains a 3.75 GPA while studying nursing.
Slocum had a fantastic meet at the team's first ever NCAA Regional competition this past weekend. The sophomore competed on both floor and vault, posting scores of 9.825 and 9.9, respectively, en route to the team finishing with a 196.250, which was just .0275 away from first-place Auburn and Stanford.
Not only did Slocum's floor score tie her career-best, but it also put her in a tie for first-place at the meet. Based on her finish, Slocum qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships, April 15-16, as an individual floor competitor. The sophomore is only the second Eagle to qualify for the national championship, following Robin Loeheide in 1993.
The Holly Springs, N.C. native will take part in the second session of the NCAA Semifinals, which begins April 15 at 7 p.m. For more information on the NCAA Championships, please click here.
