Friday Finals Heat Sheet
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan Unviersity women's swimming and diving team saw six Eagles qualify for Friday night's finals heats on day three of the Mid-American Conference Championships at Cooper Pool. The Green and White qualified multiple student-athletes for the championship races in all but one event.
Senior Clarice Daniel (Belcamp, Md.) continued her stellar week, posting the fifth fastest time in EMU laurels to take the second-seeded time into tonight's 400 Individual Medley finals. Clocking in at 4:22.57, Daniel shaved more than 20 seconds off her seed time on her way to recording the fastest swim of her career in the event. Freshman Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) cut roughly six seconds off her previous career-best but narrowly missed a lane in the consolation finals with a time of 4:30.80.
Eastern sent four swimmers to the pool for the 100 Butterfly in a field of 34. Junior Carly Jackson (LaPorte, Ind.-LaPorte) and freshman Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin) led the Eagles in the event, ranking ninth and 16th, respectively. Jackson missed out on a lane in the championships by just two hundreths of a second, leaving her as the top-seed in the consolation finals. Meanwhile Libreman rounds out the consolation field after recording a career-best time in the prelims.
Five Eagles competed in the 200 Free prelims, with two coming away with spots in the championship heat. Senior Becca Detro's (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) career-best time of 1:47.80 gives her the top spot in the finals and ranks as the third fastest time in program history. Junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) finished seconds behind Detro to take fifth with a time of 1:49.55. The Indianapolis, Ind. native's time ranked as the fastest in her EMU career and sits ninth in program annals.
The Green and White carried their strong showing into the 100 Breaststroke prelims where the Eagles' talented duo posted two of the top times in program history. Freshman Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) broke her own program record, clocking in with a NCAA 'B" cut time of 1:00.27. Junior Genna Worthley's (Portland, Maine-Deering) fifth ranked time of 1:02.15 is slotted just behind Duncan's prelim time in EMU history, giving Eastern two swimmers in tonight's final.
The Eagles' best showing of the day came in the final prelim race of the session in the 100 Backstroke. Sending five swimmers to the pool, Eastern Michigan qualified two for the finals and two for the consolation finals. Junior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) turned in a program record, besting her previous record of 54.59 with a time of 53.90. Senior Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) touched in in 54.70 to give the Eagles another swimmer in the finals while Liberman and freshman Erika Guenther (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) earned lanes in the consolation race.
Eastern returns to the pool this evening for the championship heats. Races begin at 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3.
