YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team remains in the Sunshine State through the weekend for a three-game series with the University of South Florida. The series starts Friday night, Feb. 26, with a game at 7 p.m. Saturday's game will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the final game of the weekend on Sunday at noon.
ALL-TIME SERIES: The Eagles and Bulls have met five times on the diamond all-time. The series currently sits at 3-2 in favor of USF. The two teams last met in 2005 when EMU took two of three from South Florida, winning the first two games of the series 9-4 and 7-6.
SIZING UP THE BULLS: USF enters the weekend with a 2-2 mark to start the season. They took a series 2-1 against Liberty, while dropping a single game against Florida Gulf Coast. USF is coming off a 34-26-1season a year ago, along with a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bulls are hitting .283 as a team in the young season, being outscored by a 23-32 margin. The offense is led by infielder David Villar, who is batting at a .500 clip, including a homerun.
Defensively, USF is holding teams to a .280 average, and has a team earned run average of 6.25. The staff is led by a pair of starters, Joe Cavallaro and Phoenix Sanders, who have matching 1.50 ERA's in one appearance each. Sanders leads the staff with seven strikeouts.
ALMOST TRAPPING THE GATORS: Playing a mid-week game against the No. 1 ranked Florida Gators at Joker Marchant Stadium, EMU gave the top ranked squad all it could handle. Leading 7-4 in the eighth inning, UF cut the lead to one going into the ninth, and eventually won on a walk-off.
RAKING IT IN: Sophomore Brennan Williams has had a tremendous start to the 2016 season with the bat, collecting 11 hits in his first six games for a .478 batting average. The 11 hits rank fourth in the country, and he is currently on a six-game hitting streak. In addition senior outfielder Jackson Martin has had an equally good start, leading the team with 11 RBI's, which is good for 5th in the nation. As a team, EMU is outscoring opponents 44-26.
HIT AND RUN: EMU has been alert and impacftul on the basepaths early in the season. They currently rank first in the country in steals (26) and fifth in hits (64). In addition, redshirt junior Marquise Gill leads the nation in steals with nine on the season.
RETURN TO THE SUNSHINE STATE: Senior Austin Wilson is the lone Florida native on the 2016 EMU baseball squad. With the team in Florida for the upcoming week, the outfielder/pitcher will be spending the week in his home state. The Valrico, Fla. native attended Bloomingdale Senior High School, which is located just outside of Tampa, Fla.
SUN DEVILS ON THE HORIZON: After spending the week in Florida, the EMU team will get the week off before flying out to Arizona for a weekend series with Arizona State University. The three-game set gets underway Friday, March 4 with a game at 6:30 MT.
