Three Eagles scored in double-digits in the loss

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Looking to win its third-straight game for the first time since beginning Mid-American Conference play, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team traveled to Athens, Ohio to square off with Ohio University Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the OU Convocation Center. The Eagles (13-13, 5-8 MAC) were unable to tame the Bobcats (17-8, 8-5 MAC) as Antonio Campbell's 33 points and 11 rebounds led Ohio to an 86-64 victory over EMU.

Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) led Eastern Michigan, pouring in 19 points on 7-of-13 from the floor, while Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) and James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) added double-digit scoring performances with 14 and 11, respectively. Overall, the Eagles shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the floor, while connecting on just 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) of their three point attempts. Bond led EMU in rebounding with seven, however Eastern was outrebounded, 42-25, in the game.

Jordan Dartis opened up the scoring for Ohio with a triple, sparking a quick 5-0 run to begin the game. Mangum quickly cut into that lead with his first three-ball of the game. Ohio fired back with five in a row to take a seven-point, 10-3, lead with 16:29 left in the opening stanza. The Eagles were able to fight back and tie up the game, 12-12, at the 13:57 mark, however, the Bobcats outscored EMU, 12-2, over the next four minutes to jump on top by 10, 24-14, with 9:30 left in the half, prompting Head Coach Rob Murphy to take a 30 second timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Eagles went on a 14-2 run, led by five points from Mangum and four from Nazione, giving them their first lead of the game, 28-26, with 5:30 left to go. Ohio came back to regain a nine point lead with a minute to go. Tim Bond was able to cut it to six, 37-31, with 30 seconds to go, allowing the Bobcats to take the final shot of the half. In the final possession, Campbell received a pass from Gavin Block and took a step back three-pointer and connecting to give OU a 40-31 lead heading into halftime.

Mangum led the Eagles with 15 points, hitting three long balls, while Bond and Toney added five points apiece. As a team, EMU connected on 46.2 percent (12-of-26) of its field goal attempts, while also hitting 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) three-pointers in the opening half.

Campbell was a force in the first half, going off for 24 points and seven rebounds, while Dartis was the only other Bobcat with more than two points in the half. Campbell was 10-of-14 from the floor, while knocking down two three-pointers. As a team, Ohio shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the floor and 40 percent (4-of-10) from beyond the arc.

Campbell opened up the scoring in the second half, converting on an and-one to give Ohio a 12-point, 43-31, lead just under a minute into the final 20 minutes. After falling behind by as many as 14, the Eagles fought back, outscoring Ohio, 11-5, to get back to within eight, 52-44, with 13:41 left in the game.

Ohio jumped back on top by 11, but the Eagles return-fired, cutting the lead to within lowest it had been in the second half, 56-49. However, back-to-back fouls, including a technical on Thompson proved costly as after he exited the game, the Bobcats pushed their lead up to 16 with 8:26 remaining.

Eastern was unable to claw back as the Bobcats continued to extend their lead before connecting on a three-pointer with eight seconds left to close the game pout at an 86-64 tally.

The Eagles return to the floor Saturday, Feb. 20, when they host the University of Toledo for a MAC West battle at the Convocation Center. Tipoff is slated for noon and will be the first leg of a doubleheader with the EMU women's basketball team.
