INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michikgan University' men's basketball team was unable to knock off IUPUI in its final game of the 2016 2K Classic, Saturday, Nov. 19. The Jaguars (2-2) were extremely efficient from the floor as the Eagles (2-3) struggled, hitting just 36.8 percent of its shots in a 83-71 setback at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. After averaging a double-double in the pair of tournament games, sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) was named to the 2K Classic Subregional All-Tournament Team.

EMU was led by Thompson, who posted 14 points and 11 rebounds for his third-straight double-double, while redshirt senior Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) posted a game-high 20 points. Seniors Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands)) and Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) each chipped in double figure scoring performances of 12 and 11 points, respectively. EMU struggled from the floor, including a 17.6 three-point field goal percentage. On the defensive end, the Eagles turned over IUPUI on 19 occasions, grabbing 12 steals. Mangum led the way with four takeaways.

Thompson opened up the scoring in the first two minutes of play with a layup, but the Jaguars responded with a three from former Eagle, Darell Combs. EMU and IUPUI traded buckets before an 8-0 run gave Eastern their biggest lead of the half, 14-9. The Jaguars came firing back with five-straight as well, knotting the game at 14.

The Eagles turned around with four-straight points before the Jaguars popped off an 18-0 run from the six-minute mark. Redshirt senior Quaran Jones (Fargo, N.D.-Ecorse (Findlay)) grabbed a loose ball and finished on a layup with just two seconds on the clock to get the Eagles within 14, 36-22, as both squads head into the locker room.

It was the Jaguars' three-ball that was the difference in the first half, as they connected on 8-of-12 triple tries, while the Green and White went 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. As a team, Eastern shot just 25.7 percent from the floor. Thompson was the Eagles' offensive leader going 3-of-6 from the floor, posting eight points in just seven minutes of play.

The second half was much of the same for both the Eagles and Jaguars. Early on, the Jaguars pushed their lead out to 18, 49-31, with 16:13 left in the game. Eastern was able to cut back within 15, but IUPUI responded in the next few minutes with a run to jump out to its largest lead of the game, 64-42.

IUPUI cruised the rest of the game as EMU cut it to within eight but the Eagles were unable to mount the comeback necessary to get back into the game, falling, 83-71.

Eastern Michigan returns to Ypsilanti, Wednesday, Nov. 23, when it takes on Madonna University on Thanksgiving Eve. The Eagles and Crusaders will tip-off at 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
