PITTSBURGH, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team opened up the 2016-17 campaign on the road Friday, Nov. 11, when it traveled to the University of Pittsburgh for the first contest of the 2016 2K Classic. The Eagles (0-1) fought back from a deficit of as many as 12 in the second half to force two overtimes with the Panthers (1-0). EMU eventually fell, 93-90, as Pittsburgh took advantage of free throws in the final overtime. It was the first double overtime game that EMU has played in since its controversial loss last year to Ball State, 88-87, Jan. 23, 2016.

Redshirt senior Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) led the Eagles' offensive attack with 27 points, going 9-of-22 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) posted a career-best 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting, with two blocks, two steals, two rebounds and an assist. Sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) led the Green and White in rebounding with 13 boards, while senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands)) put together a solid outing with 12 points and six assists. Sophomore Baylee Steele (Norwalk, Iowa-Norwalk (Des Moines Area C.C.)) notched six points and five rebounds in his first game as an NCAA Division I student-athlete. As a team, Eastern shot 42.9 percent (33-of-77) from the floor and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) from the charity stripe. EMU out-rebounded the Panthers, 45-41.

For Pittsburgh, Jamel Artis and Michael Young led the way with 27 and 26 points, respectively. The Panthers shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the field, while going 35-of-45 from the free throw line.

Pitt opened up the scoring with a jumper from Young before Thompson converted on a reverse layup on a smooth dish from Bond. The Panthers scored four-straight to take a 6-2 lead before EMU responded with four of their own. After trading blows, the Eagles saw Pitt go on a 7-0 run, taking an 18-10 advantage with 10:23 to go in the first.

Looking at an eight point deficit, the Eagles fought back to within three, 22-19, at 7:36, but Pittsburgh was able to extend the lead back out to nine with six-straight points. Eastern did not go away, as the Green and White clawed back with a 12-5 run to make it, 33-31, in favor of Pitt. The Panthers, however, were able to score the final seven points of the first half, taking a 40-31 lead into the locker room.

Trailing at the break and spreading the wealth offensively. Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) led the Eagles with seven points, while Bond and Thompson each contributed six in the opening 20 minutes. Thompson was a beast on the glass in the opening half with nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. The Eagles were plagued by turnovers, coughing up the rock on seven occasions, while Pitt turned over the ball just four time. EMU out-rebounded the Panthers in the first half, 21-20.

Lee started off the second half with a layup and Bond notched a lay in on the Eagles' next possession after a steal from Toney. Over the next two minutes, the Eagles brought it back to within two, 42-40, as there was 17:21 left in the half but a quick 9-0 run by the Panthers gave Pitt an 51-40 lead with 14:24 to go.

The Panthers and Eagles traded buckets for awhile but with a 12 point lead under eight minutes remaining, Eastern surged, going on a 9-0 run, sparked by seven point from Toney bringing the game to within two, 64-62, at the 4:36 mark. After trading baskets, Lee drove the lane and was fouled. The Detroit, Mich. native knocked down both free throws to knot the game up, 66-66, for the first time since early in the first half.

Pitt return-fired with five-straight points, before EMU grabbed four in a row. Trailing, 71-70, Young connected on the second half of a one-and-one to put the Panthers up two. On the ensuing possession, Toney drove the lane and finished through contact with one second on the clock to send the game into overtime.

The Eagles led for much of the first over time, taking a lead by as many as three when Lamar Wofford-Humphrey (Chicago, Ill.-Flossmoor-Homewood (Butler C.C.)) flushed a dunk with 2:28 to give EMU a 79-76. The Panthers didn't go away, scoring three in a row. Eastern again traded baskets until Artis knocked down the front end of a one-and-one to even up the contest at 83 apiece, sending the contest into a second overtime period.

EMU took the first lead in the second overtime as Nick Madray (Mississauga, Ontario-Stephen Lewis (Binghamton)) connected on a pair of free throws before Young did just the same on the other end for Pitt. The Panthers then extended their lead out to four, 89-85, with a jumper from Sheldon Jeter and a pair of free throws by Chris Jones with 1:45 left. Hitting free throws down the stretch, Eastern was unable to overcome the Atlantic Coast Conference foe and fell, 93-90

The Eagles return to action Sunday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Dallas, Texas to continue the 2K Classic as they square off with Southern Methodist University. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. CT at Moody Coliseum.
