YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind the brace of freshman Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street), the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team topped the University of Toledo, 2-1, at home Sunday, Oct. 9. Sophomore Kaylin Wiliams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made five saves in the win, while McNeill became the first player to net two goals in a game since Kristin Nason did so, Sept. 6, 2015.
Toledo (6-7-1, 1-4-1 MAC) held an 8-6 edge in shots in the first half but the Eagles gained a 1-nil lead in the match. Garnering a free kick just inside midfield, the Eagles sent senior Stef Barcelos (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus) to deliver the service. Sending the cross to the back post, Barcelos connected with McNeill for the go ahead goal. McNeill tapped the delivery out of the air and past the UT keeper to put EMU in front, 1-0, in the 12th minute.
Leading 1-0 at the break, the Green and White spent a majority of the second half fending off attacks from the Rockets. Holding off corners and free kicks by the Rockets, the Eagles one goal lead stood until the 75th minute when Isabella Echeverri lead Kiersten Johnson into the box for the equalizer.
With the match level at one, the Eagles pieced together a few scoring chances over the final 15 minutes of regulation but came up empty.
Beginning the extra period with possession, the Green and White took it to the Toledo defense. Gaining control in the midfield, senior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) sent a ball to the feet of McNeill near the sideline. Using her speed to escape her mark, McNeill ripped a shot and found the back of the net, giving EMU a thrilling, 2-1, overtime win over the Rockets in the 96th minute.
The Eagles close out a four-game homestand next weekend, Oct. 14-16, with a pair of MAC cross-divisional contests. EMU begins the weekend against Ohio University Friday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m. before hosting Kent State University for Senior Day Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m.
