Eastern Ends Up on Wrong End of High Scoring Affair, 94-86

EMU dropped the in-state rivalry game in Kalamzoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Looking at a four-game losing streak, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team traveled across the state to square off with Mid-American Conference West Division opponent Western Michigan University Saturday, Jan. 30. The Eagles (10-11, 2-6 MAC) were unable to best the Broncos (9-12, 3-5 MAC) as hot shooting took down the Green and White, 94-86, at University Arena in Kalamazoo.
Ty Toney (Alpharetta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands College)) was the Eagles' high scorer, matching his career best with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting, while Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) set a career high with 17 points and James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) posted the 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. All five starters posted double-digit scoring affairs as Brandon Nazione (Howell, Mich.-Howell (Des Moines Area C.C.)) and Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) posted 10 and 11 points, respectively. Additionally, Mangum posted a career-best six assists in the loss. As a team, the Green and White shot 43.1 percent (28-of-65) from the floor, including a scorching 60.6 percent (20-of-33) in the second half. In addition, EMU connected on 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) of its three-pointers and shot 88 percent (22-of-25) from the free throw line.
For the Broncos, Thomas Wilder led the way with a double-double scoring 35 points, while pulling down 10 rebounds. Tucker Haymond added 21 points for WMU as the team shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the floor and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from three-point land.
Western began the scoring with the first four points of the game on a pair of Haymond layups to open the game before a Thompson dunk put the Eagles on the board. Eastern struggled to get things going offensively, looking at a 10-7 deficit, the Broncos went on a 7-2 run to grab an eight-point lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Green and White was able to cut the Broncos' lead to four, 19-15, with seven minutes to go, but WMU turned up the heat offensively, with a quick 8-0 run over the next two minutes of play, jumping out to a 13-point, 28-15, lead with five minutes to go. Western continued to build on the lead and went into the locker room with a 41-24 lead at the half.
Thompson led the Green and White in the first half with eight points and six rebounds, while Toney poured in seven points. As a team, the Eagles shot just 25 percent (8-of-32) from the floor and just 10 percent (1-of-10) from beyond the arc. On the other end, the Broncos connected on 46.2 percent (12-of-26) field goal attempts, with Haymond and Wilder grabbing 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Eagles and Broncos went toe-to-toe for the first five minutes of the second half before WMU grabbed its largest lead of the game, 52-33, with 14:36 remaining. Eastern Michigan cut into that lead with a quick four points, but Anthony Avery Jr. pushed the Western Michigan lead back to 17, 54-37, with just over 13 minutes to go.
Following Avery's jumper the Eagles put together a 14-6 run to come within 10, 60-50, with 11 minutes left in the game. The Broncos pushed back to take a 16 point lead, however, with 9:36 on the clock, Haymond converted an and-one to make it 68-52. EMU was able to fight back to within six, but Western never relinquished the lead, closing out the game with eight free throw makes in the final minute of play, holding on to a 94-86 win in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Eagles return to the hardwood Tuesday, Feb. 2, when they play host to Miami University at the Convocation Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in Ypsilanti.
