YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Members of the EMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and students and staff from the Department of Diversity and Community Involvement want to see a little more "EMU Pride" around the Eastern Michigan University campus this winter.
Over the next several weeks, SAAC students and EMU Diversity and Community Involvement students and staffers will be at different locations on campus with brand new E Athletics sweatshirts. When they encounter an EMU student wearing a sweatshirt with the name or logo of another college or university, they will offer to trade that sweatshirt on the spot for the new EMU gear. All of the sweatshirts of other schools collected will be donated to the Clothes Closet at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Ypsilanti.
The idea to spread a little more EMU Pride on campus with sweatshirts was conceived by the student-athletes, who worked with representatives of adidas to design a sweatshirt. They took the idea to Vice President and Director of Athletics, Heather Lyke, and she and her staff offered their assistance and suggested a partnership with the Department of Diversity and Community Involvement to help spearhead the initiative.
"This is an exciting initiative designed to increase the level of pride in Eagle Nation," Lyke said. "If you are a proud Eastern Michigan student, we want you to wear the some great new gear! More importantly, all of our students are helping some outstanding community agencies that are extremely thankful for our support."
"One of the most important parts of the collegiate experience is the memories," said EMU's Director of Diversity and Community Involvement Reggie Barnes. "Through this initiative, students will receive high quality gear to show their Eagle pride and remind them of all the memories they have made while enabling them to give to others who are less fortunate."
Julia Lombardi, a senior on the EMU women's soccer team and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, said that EMU student-athletes take a lot of pride in representing their school and wearing the Block E logo as well as providing community service to our local agencies.
"The student-athletes here do a lot of community service it is really important to us to give back. We think this initiative allows us to support our follow students as well as our community and we are thrilled to see it come to life and make an impact.
Students can also show their Eagle pride by attending Eastern Michigan athletic contests, which are free with a valid student ID.
