PROVO, Utah (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics had a pair of its student-athletes recognized for their hardwork and dedication as Anthony Abro (wrestling) and Julia Lombardi (soccer) each named members of the third annual Hammer Strength All-American Athlete Award list. The award is distributed by Hammer Strength, in partnership with the College Strength and Conditioning Ccoaches Association (CSCCa).
"We could not be more proud to have both Julia and Anthony representing Eastern Michigan Sports Performance as Hammer Strength All American award winners," remarked EMU Director of Sports Perofrmance Ron McKeefery. "They both have consistently demonstrated their commitment to prepare like champions each and every day, far from the lights and roars of the crowd. More special is that they are both shinning examples of what it means to be a Student-Athlete. We are excited to see them get recognized nationally for their efforts."
Athletes considered for this award are characterized by intensity, consistency of purpose, achievement, and teamwork. They are superior performers on the field/court who exemplify the best of what it takes to become fierce competitors. They exhibit tremendous work ethic and leadership skills. They motivate their teammates to excel and perform at their best. Leaders by example, these student athletes have strong academic standing and exhibit good sportsmanship. They are dedicated to their sport-tireless workers in pursuit of excellence-translating everything they accomplish, be it in the strength and conditioning arena or the classroom, to performance on the field/court.
Abro completed the 2014-15 campaign by nabbing hist first 20-win season of his career with a 28-15 overall record, headlining the 197 lb. weight class for the Eagles. The Canton, Mich. native earned 22 decisions, two major decisions, two pins, one sudden victory and one overtime win. Abro earned the Eagles' lone automatic bid to the NCAA Championships after nabbing a 3-1 decision over Basil Minto of Northern Iowa in the fifth-place match at the MAC Championships before advancing it to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships prior to bowing out against Timmy McCall of Wisconsin in his first championship appearance for Eastern Michigan.
Lombardi will enter her senior season as the Green and White heads into the 2015 fall season. This year, Lombardi earned her second scholar-athlete honor after being named Capital One Academic All-District Second Team towards the end of the 2014 season. The junior defender was a primary factor in five shutouts. She appeared in 13 contests, starting nine of them and averaging 54.5 minutes per game.
