10 Eagle Baseball Players Named Academic All-MAC

The Eagles placed a league high 10 players on the 2015 Academic All-MAC Team
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced Friday, June 12, that 10 members of the Eastern Michigan University baseball team were named to the Academic All-MAC team. The Eagles and Toledo paced the conference with 10 selections each, followed by Western Michigan (9), Central Michigan (8), Kent State (8), Akron (6), Ball State (6), Miami (6), Buffalo (4), Ohio (4), Bowling Green (3), and Northern Illinois (3).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The 10 Eagles that earned the accolade included: Jake Andrews, Matthew Beaton, Sam Delaplane, Adam Dennison, Charlie Land, Ryan Lavoie, Jackson Martin, Mitchell McGeein, John Montgomery, and John Rubino.
Andrews made 12 starts on the mound in his final season for the Eagles. The Chandler, Ariz. native recorded 42 strikeouts and one complete game in 63.1 innings pitched. He tossed his first career complete game in a 5-1 victory over Saint Mary's, Feb. 22, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five and walking one. He was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week for his effort. Andrews graduated EMU with a 3.56 grade point average as a management major.
Beaton led the Green and White pitching staff with a 1.91 ERA, allowing just seven earned runs over 33 innings pitched. The right hander finished with a 1-1 record and two saves while striking out 27 batters and holding opponents to just a .235 batting average against out of the bullpen. The Guelph, Ontario native went nine consecutive appearances during the season without allowing an earned run (17.1 innings). Beaton is an aviation management technology major with a 3.40 GPA.
Delaplane notched a team-high five wins and seven saves on the mound this season for the Eagles. The seven saves was the fourth most in a single season in EMU baseball history. He recorded an ERA of 2.93 and struck out 48 hitters while holding opponents to just a .213 batting average against in 40 innings pitched. The San Jose, Calif. native garnered MAC West Pitcher of the Week honors once this season after picking up a pair of relief victories over UC Davis, Feb. 25, and Santa Clara, March 1. Delaplane carries a 3.73 grade point average as a general business major.
Dennison recorded career-highs in hits (31) and runs scored (12) in his final season donning a Green and White uniform. The Broadview Heights, Ohio native tallied five multi-hit games including a pair of three-hit performances against Western Michigan, April 4, and Bowling Green, April 8. The 2014 honorable mention Academic All-MAC member graduated from EMU with a 3.89 GPA as an exercise science major.
Land made a team-high 13 starts on the hill in his final collegiate campaign. The Wheat Ridge, Colo. native threw a pair of complete games, including a four-hit shutout over Northern Illinois, April 24. He allowed just six runners to reach base and struck out four in his first career complete game against the Huskies. Land garnered MAC West Tri-Pitcher of the Week honors following his complete game effort. He graduated from EMU with a 3.33 grade point average as an individualized studies program major.
Lavoie made 11 appearances throughout his final season, making 10 starts on the mound. The 2014 honorable mention Academic All-MAC member struck out 28 hitters and recorded a pair of wins during the 2015 campaign. He threw his first career complete game in his final collegiate start against Toledo, May 14. Lavoie graduated from EMU with a 3.57 GPA as an accounting major.
Martin appeared in 34 games, making 18 starts for the Eagles. He recorded 13 hits, including three doubles, and one homer while seeing action in the outfield and at third base. The Listowel, Ontario native blasted his first career home run against Central Michigan, April 10, capping off a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored. Martin carries a 3.44 grade point average as a general business major.
McGeein led the team in doubles (15), home runs (10), RBI (36), total bases (106), and slugging percentage (.515) while starting in all 55 games for the Eagles. The junior tied for second in the conference in homers, fourth in slugging percentage, and fifth in total bases. He batted at a .277 clip in his junior season, scoring 30 runs. The Calgary, Alberta native was named to the Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention team a season ago. McGeein carries a 3.24 grade point average as an exercise science major.
Montgomery finished second on the team with a .297 batting average while appearing in 47 games. His four home runs and .428 slugging percentage was also second on the team. The Anaheim Hills, Calif. native finished the season with 17 runs scored while driving in 20. He recorded 11 multi-hit games and four multi-RBI contests, including a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI in the Eagles victory over Kent State, March 28. Montgomery carries a 3.42 GPA as a general business major.
In his final season with the Eagles, Rubino was named to the Academic All-MAC team for the second consecutive season. The All-MAC second team member started in all 55 games at second base and led the team with 71 hits and a .311 batting average. He had 19 multiple hit contests as well as a team-best 13 game hitting streak and 27 game reached base streak during the season. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native set the single season stolen base record, recording 40 steals in his final campaign. Rubino was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Baseball Third Team and also garnered MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honors once. The MAC Medal of Excellence Award winner graduated from EMU with a 3.90 grade point average as an economics major.
