Eagles honored for excellence in its multi-year Academic Progress Report (APR)

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team received special recognition from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for excellence in its multi-year Academic Progress Report (APR), including perfect scores the past three years. The NCAA made the announcement today, May 20.

The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates (APR).  The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. This year, a record 953 teams earned public recognition with a perfect APR score.

The 1,124 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 696 women's teams and 428 men's or mixed squads, the highest ever in the decade since the NCAA began the Public Recognition Awards program. In 2014, 1,049 teams were recognized, marking an increase this year of 75 teams.

"We congratulate each of the teams and individual student-athletes for their dedication to academic success," said NCAA President Mark Emmert. "This achievement demonstrates their hard work and the commitment of NCAA member schools to provide students with an opportunity to succeed academically and athletically."

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2010-11, 2011-2012, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.

A perfect score (or graduation rate) is represented by 1,000, while a 925 (50 percent rate) marks the threshold for which the NCAA can impose sanctions on athletic programs. Full APRs for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released May 27.

A total of 71 Division I programs received public recognition in women's volleyball, including only Bowling Green from the Mid-American Conference.

The MAC had a total of 17 programs recognized Wednesday. A total of 16 Division I athletic teams from the state of Michigan earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA.
