MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team closed out three days of competition against the best athletes in the Mid-American Conference with a runner-up finish after amassing 128.50 points for the best team finish since 2011. Winning the team title was Akron with 142 points, while Kent State took third with 124 points.
"We were hoping to win but we had some setbacks in a few events and we were not able to make up those points in other areas," noted Head Coach Sue Parks. "But we had some great performances throughout the meet and I'm pleased that the team kept battling hard until the very end. I'm really proud of the distance runners and the 1-2 finishes in both the steeplechase and the 1500m. That is so hard to achieve in such a tough distance conference. I'm also happy with the consistency that we showed the entire year in the MAC with top-two finishes in all three seasons. We're looking forward to continuing on to post season competition and hopefully getting a good group qualified for NCAA's."
Eastern knocked out the field events early in the day, highlighted by a silver medal finish in the triple jump and a school record in the discus throw. In the triple jump, Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) churned out the second-farthest jump in EMU history with a lifetime personal best of 12.87 meters/42 feet 2.75-inches. With the jump, the freshman trails the EMU standard set by Joy Inniss by just over one inch. Also competing in the triple jump was Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley), who had a mark of 10.78 meters/35 feet 4.50-inches.
Breaking her own school record in the discus throw, Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio-Woodmore) had a toss of 43.68 meters/143 feet 4-inches to finish 13th. Rounding out the field events was a trio of Eagles in the high jump, led by Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) with a ninth-place jump of 1.65 meters/5 feet 5-inches, while Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) and Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) both cleared 1.60 meters/5 feet 3-inches to finish 15th and 17th, respectively.
Starting off action on the track, the quartet of Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area), Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike), and Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum) scrossed the line in 45.93 seconds for a fifth-place finish. McKinney and Clark also competed in the 100m and 200m dash, with McKinney taking fifth in the 100m in 11.84 seconds and seventh in the 200m in 24.74 seconds while Clark finished sixth in the 100m in 11.97 seconds and fifth in the 200m in 24.49 seconds.
Eastern had one competitor in the 400m, 400m hurdles, and 800m run finals. In the 400m, Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich.-Waverly) notched a personal record of 55.37 seconds to finish seventh, a one place improvement on her performance from the indoor campaign. Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif.-Carson) finished ninth in the 400m hurdle in 1:03.02, and Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) claimed sixth in the 800m finals in 2:12.04.
Knoll also appeared in the championship final of the 1500m, which was the highlight of the day as she finished runner-up in a personal-best 4:25.11 behind Victoria Voronko. Voronko claimed the win in 4:24.70, as the two stayed in the lead pack before Knoll would take the lead on the final lap and Voronko kicked down the home stretch to repeat her title in the event from a year ago. Sweeping in for fourth was Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven), who held off Miami's Laura Bess in 4:30.46.
Voronko also appeared in the final individual event of the day, finishing runner-up in the 5000m in 16:30.71. She and Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) stayed in the front pack for the first portion of the race before Voronko and Western Michigan freshman Maria McDaniel broke away from the rest of the harriers. McDaniel established more of a lead as the race went on, but Voronko claimed an easy runner-up finish far ahead of the rest of the field. McDermitt had a battle with Northern Illinois' Kelsey Hildreth for third place, but was overcome in the final 100 meters and finished foruth in 16:49.35.
In the final event, Yeadon, Wolanin, and Roberts teamed up with Agata Klimovich (Minsk, Belarus-Minsk School of Olympic Reserve) for the 4x400m relay. In a close race among all the MAC teams, the Eagles placed sixth in 3:45.08, preceded by Buffalo and followed by Miami. At the end of the scoring, Eastern was able to keep a 4.5-point lead over Kent State to earn the runner-up finish.
Following the conclusion of the meet, Voronko was honored as the Most Outstanding Track Performer. Additionally, she earned All-MAC First Team honors along with Chauchard, while Dreimane, Gallein, Knoll, and Uy were named to the All-MAC Second Team.
The season has not yet come to an end for the Green and White, as the team will send its regional qualifiers to the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., May 28-30.
