AKRON, Ohio/SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)--Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team completed its first day of competition at both the Akron Invitational and the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 6. The Green and White only competed in eight events on day one of the weekend, but many of the Eagles posted personal records over the course of Friday evening.
Competing in just the second pentathlon of her collegiate career, Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) recorded a personal-best 3,311 points to finish seventh overall. The sophomore had a pair of career bests, along with matching another career high to bolster her score. Uy had her most dominant performance in the 60m hurdles, finishing third overall in 8.84 seconds, which replicated her career best in the event. She went on to jump just half an inch off her personal best in the high jump, also garnering third place with a clearance of 1.63 meters/5 feet 4.25-inches. In the 800m and shot put, Uy recorded career marks of 2:35.98 and 8.94 meters/29 feet 4-inches, for ninth and 10th in the events, respectively. Finally, she leapt 4.84 meters/15 feet 10.50-inches in the long jump.
The Eagles had two more events for Friday's slate, and saw another pair of personal records. In the blue division pole vault, Janina Pollatz (Grandview, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) cleared 12 feet for the first time in her collegiate indoor career, vaulting 3.67 meters/12 feet 0.50-inches to earn third place. Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley) tacked on nearly six inches to her personal best in the long jump, posting a mark of 5.38 meters/17 feet 8-inches to finish fourth in the blue division of the long jump, while Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) jumped 4.99 meters/16 feet 4.50-inches for 11th.
Action in South Bend, Ind. started out with a bang, as Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) broke the EMU record in the 5000m run. The freshman harrier bested her previous career best by eight seconds, placing third in 16:27.69, which breaks the program standard by almost a second. Cizmas recorded a time of 17:33.23 in her first collegiate 5000m run, while Frauhammer shaved nearly 40 seconds off her personal best to finish in 18:05.05.
In the sprints, the Eagles showcased some extremely promising marks. Maya Carter (Racine, Wis.-Case) ran a personal-best 8.93 in the 60m hurdles, becoming just the second Eagle this season to run a sub-nine-second mark in the event, while Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif.-Carson) clocked in at 9.17 seconds. The pair also competed in the 600m, with Hurd recording a personal best of 1:37.30 for 25th, while Carter finished in 1:43.28.
