YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Looking to build on a strong weekend of competition at the Akron and Meyo Invitationals, Feb. 6-7, Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team will once again split up for its upcoming meets. On Friday, Feb. 13, members of the team will head to Allendale, Mich. for the GVSU "Big Meet," while another group will trek to Geneva, Ohio for the SPIRE Invitational. The meet at Grand Valley will consist of one day of competition, but the SPIRE Invitational will run through Saturday, Feb. 14.
Eastern has been putting up impressive marks all season, and last weekend was no different. At the Meyo Invitational, freshman Jordann McDermitt broke the varsity record in the 5000m run, edging out teammate Victoria Voronko's standard by less than a second in 16:27.69. For her performance, McDermitt was later named the Mid-American Conference Track Athlete of the Week, Feb. 10. Voronko also performed well, coming at 4:44.69 in the Meyo mile to extend her lead over MAC competitors in conference standings, while Taylor Knoll hit a six-second personal record at 4:53.45 for the ninth-fastest time in EMU history. The Eagles also saw fast times from its sprinters, especially from Aaliyah McKinney matching her career best of 7.54 seconds in the 60m, while she joined Jasmine Jones and Danielle Clark in running a trio of sub-25-second 200m dashes. The Green and White also had big performances in Akron, most notably Ellie Braidic's breakthrough jump of 4.17 meters/13 feet 8.25-inches. Her mark earned her the second-highest vault in EMU history, trailing the program leader by just over two inches.
Grand Valley's "Big Meet" will kick off on the track at 11:20 a.m. with the 5000m run, and will have track events contested until the close of the meet at 8:30 p.m. with the 4x400m relay. Meanwhile, field events will start at 2 p.m. with the weight throw and long jump, and the final field event starting at 6: 30 p.m.
In Geneva, Friday's slate will start at 2:00 p.m. with the first events of the pentathlon, but most of the track events will start at 5:30 with the 600m run. On the field, the non-elite pole vault is first on the schedule, starting at 2 p.m. Saturday is scheduled for an earlier start time, with the shot put at 10 a.m. while the mile will be contested at 10:45 to kick things off on the track.
