The Green and White had four in double-digits

BALTIMORE, Md. (EMUEagles.com) – Closing out the road portion of its non-conference schedule, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team traveled to Baltimore, Md. to square off with Coppin State University Monday, Dec. 21. The Eagles (7-4, 0-0 MAC) came away victorious, 73-62, as four student-athletes posted double-digit scoring performances, while holding Coppin State (2-11, 0-2 MEAC) to shooting just 30 percent from the floor.

Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) led the Green and White in scoring with 15 points, while Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) added 14. James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) became the first Eagle since 1970-71 when George Gervin to record seven-straight double-doubles by grabbing 13 points and 11 rebounds while Ty Toney (Alpharetta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands)) notched 13 points and seven assists in the Eastern Michigan victory. As a team, EMU shot 51.9 percent from the floor, while connecting on 7-of-17 attempts (41.2 percent) from beyond the three-point line.

Coppin State saw three members of its squad reach double-figures with Christian Kessee leading the way, posting 18 points, while Terry Harris added 15 and James Sylvester recorded 14. As a team, CSU went 18-of-60 (30 percent) from the floor and hit just nine of its 31 three-point attempts, good for just a 29 percent.

Coppin State opened the game with a Kessee triple on their first possession to take a 3-0 lead before the Green and White began a 10-0 run when an alley-oop from Toney to Bond put the Eagles on the board. A pair of triples and a layup from Toney put Eastern on top 10-3 with 14:55 left in the first half. Kessee ended the bleeding with another three-ball, but Jodan Price (Indianapolis, Ind.-Detroit Country Day (DePaul)) responded with a triple on the ensuing possession.

The two squads traded blows until the Green and White took its largest lead of the half, 24-16, with under eight minutes remaining. Looking at that deficit, Coppin State went on a 7-0 run to come within one point, 24-23, at the 6:01 mark. Again both teams exchanged buckets before a 13-2 run gave CSU its largest lead of seven, 41-34, at the 1:12 mark. EMU brought it to within four prior to heading into the break trailing, 41-37.

The Eagles were led by Thompson and Bond in the first half with eight points apiece, while Price and Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) each added six of their own. Toney was dishing out the rock for EMU in the opening 20 minutes, recording six assists, while Bond and Thompson each rejected Coppin State on one occasion. The Green and White shot at a 53.8 percent clip (14-of-26), while knocking down 6-of-10 (60 percent) of their shots from beyond the arc.

For Coppin State, Kessee and Sylvester led the way, grabbing 17 and 14 points, respectively. CSU doubled up the Eagles in second chance points which proved to be the difference in the scoring.

Eastern opened up the second half with five-straight points to regain and early lead in the final frame. Coppin State return fired with a quick 7-2 run to jump on top by four. The Eagles tied the game back up with 13:43 left on the clock before jumping out to a four point, 53-49, lead with just over 12 minutes on the clock.

Coppin State didn't go away, coming back to within one point on four separate occasions before closing out the game on a 13-4 run to seal up the 73-62 victory on the road.

The Green and White return home Monday, Dec. 28, when the Eagles welcome in in-state rival, University of Detroit. EMU will square off with the Titans at the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. Monday night.
