COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) –
Eastern Michigan University swimming & diving Assistant Coach Matt Bowe has been selected to be an assistant on the European staff for this year's Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool, Dec. 11-12 at IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.

Bowe will join a coaching staff headed by Martyn Wilby, Associate Head Coach at the University of Florida.

The event pits Team USA's top swimmers against Europe's best, showcasing the sport's most talented athletes in a short course meters, dual-meet format.

This will mark the seventh Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool, an event that has been held every other year since 2003. The 2013 event was the most thrilling, as Team USA's 23-point comeback lifted them to a 132-131 victory.

As far as format, swimmers can compete in a maximum of six events (individual and relays), and each team is allowed four swimmers per individual event while just one relay team. A combined running score will be kept counting points earned on both the men's and women's side to determine a winner.

Bowe is no stranger to the national circuit amid his third season as an assistant for long-time Eastern Michigan Head Coach Peter Linn.

Prior to joining the staff in Ypsilanti, Bowe spent a short stint as a performance coach at Loughborough University, where he coached the US Open champion in the 200 Butterfly, Tilly Gray.  Bowe also spent time as an assistant coach at the Great Britain National Centre in Loughborough from 2009-2012, where he coached back-to-back world champion and world record holder in the 50 Backstroke, Liam Tancock, as well as two-time world silver medalist in the 100 Freestyle, Francesca Halsall.

Hailing from Silecroft in Cumbria, UK, Bowe turned to coaching after a decorated swimming career.  As a member of Team Great Britain from 2003-2009, Bowe was the British champion in the 100 Fly in 2006.  In that same year, he claimed podium finishes as a part of the 4x100 medley relay team, earning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and a bronze medal at the European Championships in Budapest.  He was also a finalist in the 100 Fly at the World University Games in Belgrade (2009) and Bangkok (2007), and swam as a finalist in the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne.

"I'm really excited to be selected for Team Europe.," Bowe said. "It's a great honor to represent the European Team at such a prestigious event and I'm excited to work with some of the best athletes and coaches in the World during this important Olympic season."

Bowe will assist a team that accounted for three gold and two bronze medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Two-time gold medal winner, Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands is joined by Iuliia Efmova of Russia. Kromowidjojo reeled in gold medals in the 50 and 100 Free, while Efmova earned her bronze medal in the 200 Breaststroke. On the men's side,  200 Breast gold medalist Daniel Gyurta is joined by Laszlo Cseh of Hungary. Cseh's bronze medal came in the 200 Individual Medley.

Bowe and the Eagles host the EMU Invitiational this weekend, Dec. 4-5, before the Cumbria, UK native heads to Indianapolis, Ind. to help coach Team Europe, Dec. 11-12.
