YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics along with EMU President Dr. Susan Martin held a welcome back ceremony for all of the Eastern Michigan student-athletes Monday, Sept. 8, at the Convocation Center.
While being provided with dinner from Domino's Pizza, the student-athletes were given a t-shirt donning the Department of Athletics' new slogan of 'Champions Built Here'. Eastern's 21 varsity sports took the opportunity to learn a bit more about what it means to be an NCAA Division I student-athlete and what it means even more to be a student-athlete at EMU. Vice President and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke, along with newly appointed Deputy Director of Athletics Christian Spears spoke on these values and how the student-athletes should capitalize on all opportunities.
In addition to reminding the student-athletes of what it means to be an Eagle, and how special it is to be provided with the opportunity to attend the university, as well as play NCAA Division I athletics, Lyke spoke on what it means to win the highest achievement award bestowed by the Mid-American Conference, the Cartwright Award. The award was given to Eastern Michigan for its program excellence in academics, athletics and citizenship during the 2013-14 school year.
The welcome back assembly concluded with the EMU Marching Band teaching all of the new Eagles the EMU fight song. After learning the song, the student-athletes joined the staff on the court for a group picture before heading out to 'The Factory' at Rynearson Stadium to enjoy pizza.
