EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team completed its run at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships with one event on the final day of competition, as Mid-American Conference runner-up Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) tied for 12th in the high jump.
Wolanin cleared the initial height of 1.72 meters/5 feet 7.75-inches in two tries as the first four competitors dropped out of the competition after unsuccessful jumps. The Oxford, Mich. native then went on to make a flawless first attempt at 1.77 meters/5 feet 9.75-inches, securing a spot in the upper half of the competition. On the next bar of 1.80 meters/5 feet 10.75-inches, Wolanin fell out of contention after three attempts, landing in a two-way tie for 12th with San Diego State's Mary Wirth.
This year's winner was Georgia's Leontia Kallenou, who cleared a final height of 1.89 meters/6 feet 2.25-inches while not missing a bar on any of her attempts.
Wolanin had a momentous year, setting a personal best of 1.82 meters/5 feet 11.50-inches at the 2014 MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships to take runner-up, May 17. Her mark goes down as the second-highest clearance in EMU history behind long-time record holder Ellie Hayden.
With the end to a fantastic effort by three Eagles at the 2014 NCAA Championships, the 2014 campagin has come to a close for the Eagles. The squad will take a break until the winter, when it will begin the 2014-15 indoor season.
