Women's Track and Field Finishes Third at MAC Championships

Aaliyah McKinney wins 100m and 200m, Victoria Voronko wins 1500m and is runner-up in 5000m, Kate Wolanin finishes second in high jump

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team improved to a third-place finish at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 100.5 points, trailing only five-time MAC champion Kent State University (132) and the University of Akron (127).
The morning's events started off tremendously well for Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), who finished runner-up in the high jump behind defending MAC champion and nationally-ranked Dior Delophont of Kent State. Wolanin set a personal record by jumping 1.82 meters/5 feet 11.50-inches, which ranks second on EMU's all-time list just one and a half inch behind EMU record holder Ellie Hayden. The senior and Delophont both recorded the same height, but Wolanin's mark barely fell to Delophont on attempts. Additionally, the pair tied the MAC meet record set in 1998 by Bowling Green's Jodi Rafferty.
Another top-three finish came by way of the 4x100m relay, in which Tericka Threatt (Missouri City, Texas-Dulles), Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike), and Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum) took third in 46.12 seconds. The team then found its first MAC champion of the day in Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42), who won the 1500m run. Voronko finished in 4:25.77 for her second MAC crown of the meet, followed by a personal-best sixth-place finish from Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) in 4:30.00.
Success continued for the Green and White as McKinney notched a personal record en route to a victory in the 100m dash. The South Bend, Ind. native crossed the line at 11.79 to win in a clear upset over Bowling Green's Jeanette Pettigrew. McKinney paced Clark, who took fifth in 12.04 seconds. The pair had identical finishes in the 200m, in which McKinney broke the 24-second barrier for the first time in her career. The sophomore crossed the line in 23.71, which ranks as the seventh-fastest time in EMU history, while Clark took fifth in a personal-best 24.28 seconds.
Also landing on EMU's all-time performance list was Pauline Chiariglione (Ajaccio, France-University of Nice). The French native finished the 400m hurdles in 1:00.78 for fourth, just edging her way into the 10th spot among the program's best performers. Another Eagle mustered a fourth-place showing on the field, as Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) tied for the fourth spot in the pole vault with a jump of 3.83 meters/12 feet 6.75 inches. Freshman Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) also cleared the height and took seventh among a star-studded field highlighted by nationally-ranked vaulters. Freshman Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) also competed, taking 20th with a jump of 3.38 meters/11 feet 1-inch. To complete the Eagles' competition on the field, Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley) took 14th in the triple jump at 10.84 meters/35 feet 6.75-inches.
Voronko took to the track one final time for the 5000m run, in which she finished second behind defending champion Juli Accurso of Ohio. Voronko notched a time of 16:35.78 to pace Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind.-Fremont) and Kayla Pfund (Shelby, Twp., Mich.-Lutheran North), who finished 13th and 14th, respectively.
The meet wrapped up with the 4x400m relay, in which Yeadon, McKinney, Clark, and Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox) took seventh in 3:45.68. Following the relays, the Eagles were announced as the third-place team and Voronko was awarded co-MVP along with Delophont, as both scored 28 points for their respective teams.
"I am proud of the team," said Head Coach Sue Parks. "I think that we performed as well as we possibly could. The girls battled hard and we came away with five MAC titles and many personal bests. The girls gave it everything they had, and I'm pleased with the finish and hope that we can build on this success as we strive to win MAC titles in the future. We had many highlights, but the double wins by Voronko and McKinney, the MAC record by Chauchard, and the incredible high jump performance by Wolanin definitely stand out."
The 2014 campaign has not come to an end for the Green and White, as it will send its regional qualifiers to the NCAA East Region, May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla.
