ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team completed its first day of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday, May 15. The first four events of the heptathlon were wrapped up along with the hammer throw and 10,000m run, putting the Eagles in eighth place at the close of the short day.
Miami University holds the current lead with 23 points, followed closely by the University of Akron (22) and Central Michigan University (19). Bowling Green State University and Ohio University sit in a tie for fourth with 18 points to round out the top pack of teams after the first day of competition.
Action started on the field with the hammer throw for the Green and White, as Lydia Gomez-Diaz (Tarragona, Spain-IES Collblanc) was the only Eagle to score on the first day. The junior took eighth with a throw of 54.42 meters/178 feet 6-inches. Behind Gomez-Diaz were Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) and Reagan Briggs (Bloomdale, Ohio-Elmwood) in 13th and 17th, respectively. Waisner had a throw of 46.99 meters/154 feet 2-inches, while Briggs threw for 46.15 meters/151 feet 5-inches.
The first day of the MAC Championships also marked the first of two days for the heptathlon. Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) has a remarkable day, setting personal bests in all her events to sit in a tie for the lead with Emma Siuciak of Buffalo, both amassing 3,347 points. Competing alongside Chauchard is Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), who has 3,066 points at the end of the day's competition to sit in eighth overall.
Chauchard placed in the top-four of each events, with a winning finish in the shot put. The French native threw for a distance of 12.58 meters/41 feet 3.25-inches to win by nearly two and a half feet over Ohio's Chanda Cuckler. She picked up a pair of third-place finishes in the 100m hurdles and 200m dash, clocking in at 14.18 and 25.38. Wolanin also had success in both events, finishing sixth in the 200m at 25.87 and broke the 15-second barrier for the first time in her career in the 100H when she crossed the line in 14.96 seconds. Wolanin had her highest finish of the day in the high jump, in which she tied for second by matching her personal record of 1.75 meters/5 feet 8.75-inches. Chauchard was not far behind, claiming fourth with a jump of 1.69 meters/5 feet 6.50-inches.
The day ended with an evening running of the 10,000m, in which Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind.-Fremont) nabbed a top-10 finish in 36:11.88. The time is not only a personal record for the freshman, but it is the seventh-fastest time by an EMU runner. Aldrich was followed by Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline), who also recorded a personal-best mark of 37:39.70, shaving over 45 seconds off her time.
Competition will resume with a fuller schedule of events tomorrow, May 16, beginning with the heptathlon at 10:30 a.m. Chauchard and Wolanin will take on the long jump, javelin, and 800m run in search of a MAC championship crown before the majority of the day's events begin at 1 p.m. with the long jump and 1500m semifinals.
