Sophomore track and field athlete earns the first honor of her career
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced Wedensday, Dec. 10, that women's track and field sophomore Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) has been named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week. Uy earns the award for the first time in her career, and is the sixth Eastern Michigan University student-athlete to earn the award.
The MAC Scholar Athlete award is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. Other EMU student-athletes to garner the award for the 2014-15 academic year include: Megan McCabe (soccer), Kelsey Murphy (women's golf), Willy Fink (men's cross country), Andrew Henry (men's swimming), and Victoria Voronko (women's cross country).
Uy, who holds a 3.87 GPA in communications, set a huge personal record in the pole vault for a victory at the EMU Holiday Meet, Dec. 5. The Kettering, Ohio native recorded the fifth-highest clearance in EMU history and the first four-meter vault of her career with a jump of 4.04 meters/13 feet 3.00-inches. Uy won by a margin of nearly a foot, and her mark stands as the top vault in the conference for the 2014-15 season by nearly five inches, as she is the only MAC competitor to have cleared the four-meter barrier. Additionally, Uy recorded another personal best on the track, taking fourth in the 60m hurdles in 9.10 seconds.
The women's track and field team will be back in action to ring in the new year Friday, Jan. 9, 2015 when it hosts the EMU Triangular.
