Eagles look to improve on fourth-place finish from 2013-14
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team has been picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference, as decided by a vote of the conference's coaches, the MAC announced Friday, Oct. 3. The Eagles received the same poll placement prior to the 2013-14 season, but finished the season in fourth after compiling 469 points in a tightly-contested 2014 MAC Championships, Feb. 27-March 1.
The poll was topped by the University of Miami, which is a perennial powerhouse in the MAC. Last season, Miami was upset by the University of Akron at the MAC Championships by a margin of 88 points. Akron holds the second spot in this year's preseason poll, followed by Bowling Green State University, Ohio University, and the University at Buffalo. Standing behind EMU in the polls are the University of Toledo and Ball State University.
This year's squad has suffered some losses, particularly in 2013 and 2014 Most Outstanding Diver Danielle Hulvey, but the Eagles return the majority of last year's championship competitors. A pair of seniors will look to lead the team in Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) and Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine). Godlewski earned All-MAC First Team honors for her championship performance in the 200 fly, while earning a podium finish in the 200 and 400 IM. Dorszewski earned All-MAC Second Team accolades after taking third in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 breast. Both seniors are also integral members of the Eagles' various relay lineups. In addition to the returning Eagles, the squad will have nine fresh faces to utilize in the upcoming season, with over half the class specializing in diving.
The squad will host its annual Green and White meet tomorrow, Oct. 4 in Jones Natatorium. Fans can catch the 2014-15 squad for the first time in the current campaign when the athletes are pitted against each other, with action beginning at 1 p.m. The first competition will not take place for nearly three weeks after the team scrimmage, when the team will travel to Toledo, Ohio to take on the Rockets Friday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.
