Olson Named EMU Assistant Compliance Director

He joins the staff after interning at the University of Louisville
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Sam Olson has been named the Assistant Director of Compliance: Monitoring at Eastern Michigan University, Associate Athletics Director of Compliance Matthew Jakobsze announced today, Jan. 8.
"We are very excited to welcome Sam Olson to Eastern Michigan University's compliance staff and to the Eagle Community," said Jakobsze. "Sam comes to us highly recommended, with a wealth of education and experience at multiple levels. With Sam's addition to our compliance team, we can now provide the full array of services necessary to maintain institutional control, support our coaches, and continue to be a leader in this industry."

Olson has spent the past two years at the University of Louisville as a compliance intern while earning his master's degree in sports administration. While working at Louisville, he designed and implemented a student-athlete employment monitoring and auditing policy for the office. He also helped evaluate official transcripts of potential student-athletes to monitor and determine initial eligibility while monitoring the Academic Progress Rate data for 23 Division I varsity sports.
Olson also interned at Bellarmine University in 2013. There he helped conduct NCAA legislative research utilizing the Legislative Services Database (LSDBi) and issued recommendations on a variety of issues relating to Division I/II athletic program and student-athletes. Olson also developed a Title IX Gender Equity Plan for the Athletics Department upon analysis of overall athletics budget, recruiting expenses, travel expenses, equipment expenses, coaching agreements/contracts, academic support services, and sports information department.
Before joining the collegiate ranks, Olson worked six years at various levels of the judicial system. He was a legal intern for the Child Protection Section Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia in 2006, before serving as a law clerk for two years at Thomas & Delaney, PC in Grand Blanc, Mich. From there he went to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office and on to the Genesee County Probate Court.
