Eagles Grab Fifth at FIU Invitational

Nine Eagles earn top-10 finishes

MIAMI, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's swimming and diving team finished up the first meet of the 2014 calendar year with a fifth-place finish at the Florida International University Invitational, Jan. 10. The Eagles finished with 301 points, trailing New Mexico (554), host school FIU (458.5), Duquesne (387.5), and Florida Atlantic (349).
Nine Eagles finished with a top-10 finish in their individual events. Freshman Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) had a stellar performance as she took second in both the 50 and 100 breaststrokes, touching in at 31.10 and 1:07.53, respectively. The rookie Eagle was also a member of the fifth-place 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:47.98, accompanied by Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) and Makenzie Garringer (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon).
Garringer proved to be the top contributor in the backstroke events, as the freshman finished 10th in the 50 back and 5th in the 100 back. Godlewski continued to be a top competitor, finishing 10th in the 50 fly and fourth in the 100 fly.
Sophomore Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) came out strong in the freestyle sprints, taking eighth in both the 50 and 100 free with marks of 25.06 and 54.51.
The Green and White wrapped up the meet by placing two teams in the top-10 of the 200 freestyle relay. Godlewski, MacLean, Jackie Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville), and Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) grabbed eighth in the event after touching in at 1:41.60, while the quartet of Garringer, Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine), Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville), and Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) took 10th with a 1:42.18 mark.
The Eagles will be back in action Friday, Jan. 10, when they head to Granville Ohio to take on Denison University. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
